Variations (1999) was influenced by my studies of set theory while I was a student at the Eastman School of Music, where I became friends with Stephen Mattingly (for whom the piece was written). The work’s generic title, its nearly palindromic and rhythmically simple opening, and the reduction of the harmony into two tetrachords, namely the [0124] and [0236], show Weber’s influence on me at the time, especially the second movement of his Symphony Op. 21.

Variations was recorded by Stephen Mattingly and released on the label Clear Note Publications in July 2016. Available on itunes, Amazon, and Spotify.
