Lock in Place merges a driving, repetitive rhythmic energy with microtonal harmonies separated by a quarter tone that repeatedly collapse back into unison—two lines “locking” into one another like rotating cogwheels. The structure of the work mirrors this process of separation and reunion: roughly halfway through, each performer begins to improvise freely, diverging from the written material, until they suddenly return to notated passages drawn from the opening.
