Based on a short story by Johannes Peter Hebel, Der Kluge Richter (“The Wise Judge”) is as an imitation of Persian folk music blended with contemporary western music. The harmony is based on the Persian sikah (E-flat, F, G, A, B-flat, C, D), which can be heard as melodic fragments in the violin and cello parts. The harpsichord primarily plays percussive rhythms. In this way, the encounter between West and East is present in the music accompanying the reading of Hebel’s story.
