Assembly Line

Instrumentation: ,

Category: Chamber, Playback

This work began with no extra-musical concept. After a fair amount of it had been written, the thought sprung to mind of an automated assembly line and a product being passed down, each machine adding or altering parts.

Nearly all of the sounds in the playback came from a recording of Mark (one of the saxophonists for whom the piece was written) playing a three-octave A-flat major scale. The rest of the sounds are a few sinus tones here and there and a computer beep I found online (the low C-E-flat material in the bass starting in m. 29).

Also available for B-clarinet or oboe.

Assembly Line was recorded by Nikola Lutz and Mark Lorenz Kysela and released on Gruenrekorder in January 2016. Available on Gruenrekorder and Amazon. It was also recorded by Geoffrey Deibel and Jonathan Nichol and released on Blue Griffin Records in May 2022. Available on Bandcamp.
